Decoding the mystery of turtle genomes
|
As a part of our collaborative research with NOAA, our research on the assembly and analysis of two species of sea turtle's genomes was featured as a part of their scientific outreach.

Sea turtle genomes featured on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science Podcast
Our article describing the assembly, annotation, and analysis of two sea turtle reference genomes was featured on the PNAS podcast, Science Sessions. Myself, Lisa Komoroske and Camila Mazzoni discuss the methods, implications, and outcomes from this publication, and outline the mission moving forward. Access the podcast here.
Variation in thermal biology traits between populations covered by the ABC
Our research exploring how temperature, development and sex in sea turtle embryos was covered by the ABC following the release of the paper in Functional Ecology. The associated story can be viewed here. We show that variation exists between populations, with important differences detected between flatback (Natator depressus) populations in Western Australia. The paper can also be accessed here.
UWA Forward Focus
The University of Western Australia featured my PhD research on the Forward Focus section of their media outreach. This segment aims to promote research occurring at the University and is featured in the monthly staff news.

WAMSI climate change componentMy PhD project was one of four individual components contributing to the WAMSI Marine Turtle project for the Kimberley Node. This project aims to fill baseline questions of ecology and biology of the populations in the Kimberley region. The climate change component was featured in the WAMSI Bulletin in December 2018 and is presented here.

PhD research featured by the ABC
My PhD research on sea turtles in the Kimberley was featured by the ABC through a written article (link below), as well as on the news bulletin in Western Australia, and on the News24 across Australia. This piece focused on the work we were doing on the Lacepede Islands as a part of the WAMSI Turtle Project, an collaborative project between UWA, WA Parks and Wildlife, CSIRO and a number of others. We also form close collaborations with Traditional Owners and local ranger groups, in this case the Nyul Nyul rangers visited the islands with us on a couple of occasions.
Link to the ABC story This story was also picked up and featured on the program "Behind the News" - which aims to present news topics in a way that primary school students can understand it. Find it here. |

Wild Magazine - "Sea turtles in distress"
|
In early 2016 our research was also featured by Wild Magazine in a collaborative project with a journalist from UC Berkley, Leslie Cory.
This story was a broad introduction to the effects that climate change is expected to have on the sea turtle populations in North-Western Australia. The article associated with the video can be found here. |
